Ripple Labs formally launched the XRP Ledger’s (XRPL) Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) sidechain to mainnet on June 30, 2025. As the ecosystem’s interoperability becomes a larger focus, the new sidechain has been designed with connectivity in mind. It provides a unique opportunity for developers to launch their Ethereum-compatible decentralized applications (dapps) in the XRPL ecosystem.
Built with developers first in mind, the sidechain will allow developers to create, develop and deploy their EVM based applications. The sidechain removes the EVM compatibility vs. XRPL’s benefits trade-off. It gives them access to XRPL’s built-in network of more than 6 million wallet holders.
"The XRPL EVM Sidechain introduces a flexible environment for developers to deploy EVM-based applications, while maintaining a connection to the XRPL’s efficiency," - David Schwartz, Ripple's chief technology officer and a co-creator of XRPL.
With the sidechain now launched, the opportunity is there for dapps to take advantage of XRP’s already built payments infrastructure. Future plans include connecting the sidechain with Wormhole, another interoperability protocol, which would allow communication between different networks. The development of this integration will open the door for even more developers to leverage the power of the XRP ecosystem.
